ASF in the NYC Marathon: Joe Canavan

Six runners are representing and raising money for the Adaptive Sports Foundation by participating in the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5. We had a Q & A with one of our runners, Joe Canavan, that we would like to share with everyone! Please consider donating to Joe’s fundraising page by clicking here.
ASF: Hi Joe! How old were you when you first started running and what did you like most about it?

JC: I have been running off and on for most of my life. More or less consistently for perhaps the last 10 years or so.

ASF: What inspired you to pursue the NYC marathon and why did you choose to run for the ASF?

JC: I have run the Boston Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon. The New York City Marathon will be another feather in my cap. I am familiar with your adaptive veterans program, Warriors in Motion®, and I’m thrilled to support it in my humble way.

ASF: What’s your go-to running playlist/song?

JC: I don’t listen to music while I run

ASF: Do you have a “running buddy?” If so, how do they impact your run?

JC: I don’t have a running buddy since my buddy received a bad injury.

ASF: Tell us about your training regimen. What did you do to prepare for the marathon?

JC: I have a knee injury so I try to hit the “sweet spot” between enough miles for the endurance I need and avoiding further injury. I also stretch, do calisthenics, and lift weights.

ASF: What are you looking forward to the most on marathon race day?

JC: I look forward to a mass of humanity all striving together to complete the marathon. Runners, volunteers, officials and spectators. I am sure the whole experience will be wonderful.

ASF: What is your favorite thing to do in the city?

JC: I do like to run around the reservoir in Central Park. I also like museums, so the Met or the Natural History Museum will be visited.

Good luck Joe, and thank you for fundraising and supporting the Adaptive Sports Foundation!
